Lake Arenal

Overview

Lake Arenal is situated in the northern highlands of Costa Rica and sits at the base of the Arenal Volcano, rated one of the 10 most active volcanoes in the world. The lake extends across Guanacaste and Alajuela provinces. This man-made lake was created in 1979 as part of a hydroelectric project. Currently the lake provides about 12% of Costa Rica’s electricity demands and is a main component of the country’s green energy policy.

Recreation

Lake Arenal is also a major recreation destination. The lake is abundant with activities such as fishing, bird watching, wake boarding, windsurfing, boat tours, horseback riding, mountain biking, kayaking and many other activities. In fact Lake Arenal is considered to be one of the top windsurfing locations in the world.

Arenal Volcano

This amazing stratovolcano stands a majestic 5,437 feet over the valley floor and is truly a sight to behold. People come for all the world in hopes of catching a glimpse of the volcano’s activity. Don’t worry, all of the towns and hotels in the area area set back at a safe distance from the volcano.

There is releases of smoke and lava on an almost daily basis which makes for some of the most dramatic looking photos and incredible evening viewing of mother nature’s force and creativity.

Hot Springs

Due to the geothermal activity around the volcano there is an abundance of hot springs for locals and visitors to enjoy. There are hot springs resorts for every budget with immaculate landscaping and captivating views of the volcano.
